Speed Reading Home > Speed Reading Exercises Basic speed reading exercisesSpeed reading exercises help mainly to improve your vision. Most people are taught to use so called "tunnel vision" when they are reading. It is putting a limitation on your vision so that you can focus only on a small amount of information. This is a bad habit of reading. For example, say you are told to look at a picture, let's say, "The Last Supper." When you are looking at the picture, does your vision always narrow down so that you only look at one face at a time instead of looking at the whole picture? Well, of course not. But that's the way the most people are accustomed to reading. Their vision narrows down every time they read and they are only able to read 2-8 words, instead of 2-8 lines of text, at a time . In order to widen your field of vision, many have been developed. One of the exercises is to enhance your eye movement by playing games requiring your eyes to scan rapidly. Or they may put up a group of words and sentences for a brief period of time to encourage you to read materials faster. This is usually followed by a test to see if you have read and comprehended the text. Another exercise is using a pointer when reading. Making your eye follow the words at a same speed as the pointer movement helps to look at more words at the same time.
