Studies have shown that taking a speed reading program does help people to read faster while keeping a high level of comprehension. Attending a helps you to break old habits and form new techniques. Most programs consist the following:

Most speed reading programs have good reading exercises and games used mostly to enhance your field of vision. This helps the brain to absorb more information faster. Most of them recommend using a visual guide such as a finger and learn to make eyes follow speed of the finger. It is okay not to comprehend everything during the first few weeks of learning. This is normal at first and with practice, people slowly adjust to reading fast with better comprehension.

Taking a speed reading program also helps to get rid of bad habits such as skip back. Skip back is the process of skipping back to the previous sentence. Skipping back breaks the rhythm and pace of reading which slows down the speed quite a bit. One helpful way to overcome this is to use a finger or a pointer as you read. Then the speed of reading does not become dependent on movement of your eyes, but how fast you move your pointer.

Many programs use speed tests to determine how fast and how much you have improved throughout the program. It determines your speed and sometimes provides a graph or a diagram for you to observe your progress.
