A speed reading test should be taken prior to and during any Speed Reading Course to measure how much you have improved. This test usually measures how fast people read a text consisting of a few hundred words. The length of time used to complete that text is converted into number of words read per minute. * 0 - 150 words per minute. Slow readers. Typically they also have very poor comprehension. Most of people who read at this rate are not steady readers. Many of them do not enjoy reading at all and have read less books compared to the average. * 150 - 230 words per minute: Below average. Often poor comprehension. * 230 - 250 words per minute: Average readers. * 250-350 words per minute: Above average. Most of them enjoy reading and have higher education than average people. * 350 - 800 words per minute. This is considered as fast to extremely fast. Many of these people love reading, have a high level of education, have taken a reading course, and have been reading almost daily throughout their lives. They usually have good comprehension skills. * 800 or more words per minute. Even though this rate seems incredibly fast, generally they are considered as skim readers who read without fully comprehending the reading material. Courses and programs advertising to increase the speed up to 10,000 words per minute are achieved only by a very few exceptional individuals. Studies have shown that it is hard to learn to read faster after they have doubled or tripled their original reading speed.
